Septic Tank Treatment Options – RID-X Versus NORWECO Bio-Gem Review

As a homeowner, I always had trouble with my septic tank system.  Due to various issues, I had to pump my septic tank every one to two years.  Around the year 2000, this was not a big issue in that pumping costs were about $100.  Septic tank pumping costs are now about $350 for a 1200 gallon septic.  This high-cost and the inconvenience of having to pump forced me to look at septic tank additives.  From the year 2002 about 2005, I tried many septic tank additives.  Septic tank treatment additives that I tried included RID-X and numerous other liquid additives.

All the standard commercial additives available, most notably RID-X, barely extended the time between pump intervals.  In addition, noticeable odor from my septic tank and floor drains were prevalent when I used RID-X in these other products.  As a licensed wastewater engineer, I felt that I could do better.  My research led me to start using NORWECO Bio-Gem organic digester.  I started using Bio-Gem in the summer of 2006.  Since using Bio-Gem organic digester, I have not had to pump my septic tank for over six years now.  One side benefit that I see in using the NORWECO Bio-Gem organic digester is the elimination of the rotten egg smell, which I had up to this point.

In addition, I had clogging line problems from the house to the septic tank.  My wife routinely poured bacon grease another oils down my sink drains.  These greases clogged my line from my house my septic tank.  I troubleshot this problem with a sewer camera prior to and after using Bio-Gem.  Over a couple months, the Bio-Gem product digested all the grease buildup in the line.  I have had no further problem with this line clogging.

I became a NORWECO distributor, since I like the product so much.  Please visit our online store for pricing on this fine product.  I discount the prices of all NORWECO products since I have low overhead and that I do volume online selling.

Sewage Wastewater Lift Pump Design Considerations

Properly designed Wastewater Lift pump systems require some basic attention that most plumbers just fail to address. When designing your Sewage lift unit, we recommend that you consult a registered engineer to ensure that your system will work reliably for years.

We reviewed internet posts, which present guidance for homeowners and plumbers to use when choosing a Sewage wastewater lift system. Most of the internet “advice” we reviewed fails to consider some critical pump design elements. This article attempts to highlight a few minimal design considerations which we feel should be addressed.

Firstly, what type of wastewater requires pumping? For example, various sewage pumps can pass different size solids from small quarter inch pieces to up to 2.5 inches in diameter. For larger size solids, grinder pumps are used, much like a garbage disposal, to chop up the solids into smaller particles that can be pumped. Therefore, if we are pumping screened or filtered wastewater, a liquid pump is adequate. The liquid pumps are generally multi-staged pumps and can deliver a high head (pump outlet pressure). If solids are screened in larger pieces, then specially designed lift pumps can be used which can pass the larger solids.

All pumps require a minimum net positive pump suction head (NPSH) to minimize cavitation. If the pump cavitates excessively, then the impeller will wear out, possibly in a year or so. A properly design system ensures that the correct pump is chosen which will match the system, minimizing cavitation and extending pump life.

The figure below is pump curves for the basic NORWECO wastewater lift units and a “typical pump placement.” The pump curves are the curves bending downwards. Each pump has a different application and you select the appropriate pump based on the desired lift height and the resulting system curve. The system curve, in this example, curves upward. Where the pump and system curves meet yields the flow rate and pump lift height when the pump is running. Generally, you meet NPSH requirements if the pump curves intersect without extrapolation.

The system curve should ALWAYS be calculated as noted in the bottom of figure one. The calculation ensures that the pumps operate in an acceptable range. As a homeowner or contractor, you should ALWAYS ask to see the pump and system curves for your application. Please do not trust an installation that does not perform the calculation, force your plumber or engineer to provide one.

One additional consideration is the pump chamber height and/or lift. I notice many “sewage pump units” offered on the internet. The pump units are short and fat sumps. We estimate that these systems are very inadequate. When the pump sump height is too low, the pump will tend to short cycle. The “short cycling” can cause excessive pump wear. Also, the on/off and alarm settings tend to be unreliable due to the short travel distance (the pump sump height is much too small) in liquid height. In the NORWECO pump units, you adjust the pump sump heights are by adding segments to the sump. This gives the design engineer flexibility in pump designs which ensure maximum pump cycle times and proper NPSH.

Please consider our line of NORWECO lift stations. Our pricing is very competitive and we do maintain staffs of registered engineers, which can provide complementary lift pump calculations with every purchase. We feel that the NORWECO pump units are the best pump units on the market today.

Septic Tank Treatment for Odors and Conditioning RID-X Review

By Bruce Hardboss, PE

Have you ever had your septic tanks Sinks, showers, etc. produce a foul smell like rotten eggs? The rotten egg smell is due to the production of Hydrogen Sulfide.  I used to constantly deal with a rotten egg smell from my house’s showers and bathtubs. I tried to use various septic tank treatments such as RID-X®. The RID-X® septic tank conditioner did nothing for the rotten egg smell and did not help the performance of my septic tank which required pumping every two to three years or so.

As a professional wastewater engineer, I took it on myself to solve this problem. Hydrogen Sulfide is produced by bacteria in my septic tank and supply lines in anaerobic conditions. Basically, in the absence of Oxygen,  the anaerobic bacteria use mineral compounds present in their environment to basically breath. As the more efficient compounds are used up (ones that have a higher energy yield) you are eventually only left with Hydrogen sulfide producing compounds.

The use of RID-X® or similar compounds are limited to enzymes and do little for supplementing the minerals and compounds which the anaerobic bacteria need to metabolize. So RID-X® or similar dry compounds do little to treat the “smell.”

I have discovered NORWECO Bio-Gem® organic digester about eight years ago. Bio-Gem® is a liquid product, which is loaded with beneficial bacteria (which are engineered to digest solids and grease) and a high concentration of the top tier nutrients and compounds. These nutrients and compounds promote good septic tank health and prevent the production of

Hydrogen Sulfide.

Bio-Gem® has solved my septic tank pumping problems (I have not had to pump my septic tank in over 6 years, vice every two years without), and moreover, there is absolutely no odor being produced from anywhere in my septic system.

As a professional engineer, I strongly recommend the use of Bio-Gem® on a regular basis. Bio-Gem® minimizes septic tank pumping and eliminates septic system odors. Also, Bio-Gem® can be used in homes and businesses on city sewers to unclog supply lines and also it prevents odors. Try it you won’t be disappointed.

Wastewater and Sewage Microorganism – 3 Parasites Incidental to Wastewater and Sewage Disinfection

Schistosoma mekongi

Image via Wikipedia

Various  spherical worms parasites and flatworms can be transmitted to humans by means of ingesting contaminated water. A single mature larva (or fertilized eggs) can lead to infection and these parasites are relatively durable.

To keep away from the condition due to schistosome, the drinking water might be saved for forty eight hours and as a result rendered safe. Slow sand filters can eliminate the greater part of cercariae (if appropriately operated) and disinfection with residual chlorine of .5 mg/l for one hour will destroy cercariae of the human schistosomes. We recommend chlorination in any event.

A sounder strategy is to get rid of host snails which are inclined to fecal contamination and to other microorganisms in wastewater. The grandmother’s strategy of boiling and filtering will usually function in opposition to contaminating wastewater microorganism species.

Rotifiers

Rotifers are multicellular animals that can take in small particulates as effectively as bacteria and algae between other sewage microorganism species. The rotifers can attach themselves to flock particles and graze on the bacteria on the flock surface. Due to the fact of their significant measurement, protozoa and rotifers and related microbes in wastewater are very easily acknowledged under the microscope and are usually utilized as indicators of the biochemical qualities of wastewater remedy techniques.

The rotating movement of the cilia located on the head of the organism is a sure method to identify the bacteria.  Metabolically, rotifers can be labeled as aerobic chemoheterotrophs.

Crustaceans

Like rotifers, crustaceans are aerobic chemoheterotrophs that feed on wastewater microorganism species like bacteria and algae. These difficult-shelled, multi-cellular animals are a source of foods for fish. (Crabs and lobsters are crustaceans).

Sewage Wastewater Treatment – Disinfection Via Chlorine UV and Ozone

Article by Hardboss

In wastewater treatment, the effluent sewage stream is sometimes disinfected. Disinfection is accomplished, generally, by either using contact

Clean drinking water...not self-evident for ev...

Image via Wikipedia

chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) processes or by applying Ozone. Disinfection is generally required if the waste stream has the potential to come into contact with the general population, or drinking water supplies. The overall goal is to reduce the infection risk to the surrounding population.

Chlorine Disinfection

The least expensive and most common type of disinfection is by chlorination. Generally, the wastewater stream passes over chlorine tablets (known as contact chlorination) which increases the chlorine concentration in the wastewater. The increased chlorine concentration is very effective in killing most harmful pathogens.

The second type of contact chlorination is a batch process. In batch application(s), the wastewater fills a large tank, where sufficient chlorine is added to kill most pathogens. In batch processing, the chlorine is added manually as a powder or as chlorine gas.

In sensitive areas, the chlorinated wastewater stream can be passed through de-chlorination tablet feeders to neutralize the chlorine prior to discharge. One disadvantage is that salts are introduced into the environment via the chlorination/de-chlorination process.

Ultraviolet Disinfection

Ultraviolet disinfection (UV) uses no chemical in the treatment, and the treated water is not subjected to the salts produced in chlorination processes. One significant disadvantage is that the UV disinfection systems require constant maintenance and a power source. UV light bulbs or windows must be cleaned regularly and bulbs replaced.

Ozone Disinfection

Third type of chlorination method is Ozone. Ozone if a very effective and fast-acting disinfection method. Generally, the Ozone is produced onsite and is introduced into the waste stream. Ozone disinfection requires higher power supplies to run, but is relatively safe. Maintenance requirements complicates the Ozone process and its reliability.

We recommend using Chlorination tablet feeders and the applicable Chlorine tablets to disinfect most wastewater streams. We feel that the NORWECO Chlorine tablet feeders, and the NORWECO Disinfection tablets are the best on the market. Please visit our online store for pricing.

Options For Sewage Lift Stations Of Today

Traditional sewage lift stations work well, but can have their drawbacks. Thanks to modern methods, there are options which can increase efficiency and save money. There are also other important benefits to consider. Here is a look at traditional pumping methods and how they can be improved.

A waste water pumping station is necessary whenever the problem of higher elevations is faced. A conventional station for pumping includes a dry well, as well as a wet well. Both wells are in the same general area for efficiency, and are often part of the same structure. The dry well contains the pump motors and their inlets extend below ground level into the wet well. This configuration allows for automatic pump priming. It also allows for the highest net positive suction head, also known as NPSH. NPSH is needed for an effective hydraulic system.

A conventional sewage lift station pump has a dry well with pumps mounted above the ground. This is done to protect them from any flooding. Pump motors incorporate long shafts and they extend into the wet well area. As pumps are above ground, they must have protection from the elements, in the form of a housing.

Modern day options include package sewage lift systems. They offer a great deal of convenience and eliminate the need for dry wells. The package system is usually complete from the factory and comes with the wet well, pumps, pipes, valves, control panels, junction boxes, and an alarm system.

Packaged pumping stations feature pumps that are submersible. They can be either grinder pumps or solid handling pumps. The wet well in this kind of system is not intended for storage and its simple operation requires fewer controls than conventional systems.

A packaged pumping station provides a lot of benefits over other kinds. As the pumps are submerged, the entire operation takes place under the ground. The pumps do not require special protection from the weather, so no special housing is required. There is not a great deal of maintenance needed on a packaged system, either.

Packaged pumping stations are easy to install, and everything that you need comes with the kit. Life expectancy of these systems can be as long as 20 years, which is above average. These systems take up a smaller footprint on the land, as the only visible structure houses the control panel. Everything else is below ground, as the pumps are completely submerged. Also, many of these systems are designed to handle high capacity and have redundancy features in the event of one pump not working.

Sewage lift stations have many options today. For example, there is no need to have a dry well, as in the past. Modern systems include the use of a packaged pumping station which comes complete from the factory. These systems are easy to install and maintain, and can save a lot of money on operating costs. It is an excellent way to increase the efficiency of a modern day waste system.

Due to diminishing H2O resource and increasing cost associated with dross H2O power, along with stricter occurrent ordinance, orthophosphate and dross H2O attention and direction is becoming ever solon requisite. The municipal business, which incorporates H2O and associated waste originating from residential country, informercial and industrial operation and institution, consumes the greatest quotient of H2O and olibanum dross H2O occurrent. All H2O that is consumed by these user requisite be treated before it is released dorsum into the circumstance. Sewage Treatment and Management – Sewage Lift

Sewage Treatment Plant for the City of Spokane...

Image by The U.S. National Archives via Flickr

Wastewater is water that has been affected by outside human influences. It can be comprised of liquid waste from commercial properties, industry, agriculture, and domestic residences. Sewage is wastewater that has been contaminated by human excrement and is also often used to describe any type of wastewater.

Sewage treatment and wastewater management are techniques used to remove sewage and wastewater contaminants. The techniques used involve physical, chemical, and biological processes and are important in creating environmentally safe waste for disposal or reuse. Some wastewater has even been turned into safely consumable water by using these processes.

A lot of sewage is collected using gravity sewers, force mains, manholes, regulators and sewage lift stations. The sewage is then conveyed to the water treatment plant using systems such as local sewers, combined sewers, intercommunity relief sewers, interceptor sewers, automated regulators and pump stations. Use of these systems ensures the wastewater is safely transported to the wastewater management plants where it can then go through the treatment process. The treatment process used consists of two treatments: primary treatment and secondary treatment. During the primary treatment dirt, sand, and other solids are removed. However, there are still solids that have been left behind, so a secondary treatment (using a biological process) is used to remove the remaining solids. After this treatment is complete, the safe water is released to a river or lake.

Some homes and businesses do not have connections to any collection and conveyance system that relays the wastewater to the city’s waste management facilities. In this case, alternative methods are used such as septic tanks, personal wastewater treatment plants, and cesspools. Determining the right method of wastewater management depends on the situation it will be used in. Septic tanks are appropriate for almost any situation and use an anaerobic bacterial environment within the tank to decompose and mineralize the waste. Personal wastewater treatment plants are great because they are somewhat easier to install and more environmentally friendly by using filtration systems. With many septic tanks, conversion kits can be purchased so one can turn their septic tank into a water treatment plant. Cesspools are simply holding tanks and should be used as a last resort since they have to be emptied very regularly.

Septic tanks and personal wastewater treatment plants can actually be more beneficial than using local wastewater treatment plants as they provide onsite wastewater treatment instead of the sewage being sent to a public wastewater treatment facility. This will allow homeowners and business owners to save money by not paying for sewer lines and to benefit from groundwater being cleaned onsite which will provide more clean water for plants to grow and assist in keeping a better water supply. Using these methods over city sewage treatment plants also reduces the risk of raw sewage leaking and contaminating local groundwater. This problem can occur when sewer lines age and are not properly maintained. Properly maintained and installed septic tanks and personal wastewater treatment plants do not carry this same risk and are much more environmentally friendly.

Commercial Wastewater Treatment

Ammonia is a chemical presented in a smorgasbord of familiar home ware sort frame pesticide, lav fishbowl cleansers, oven effervescing and other cleaning agent. Even though laws strictly regulate

Ammonia

Image via Wikipedia

the grade of ammonia concentration in each commercialized point, dangers to users who directly interact this toxic chemical tinned not be eliminated entirely.

Even in a very depression titer, inhaling breath with ammonium, or acquiring the brine on your cutis tin solon often antecedent trauma variety combustion, fainting or, termination, decease. Since ammonium is used often industrially, we should be alarmed of their impurity ware that usually issue into effluent. With these fact, we should be wary about how to distance ammonium from impurity H2O.

There are several ways in removing excess ammonia in the wastewater.

One of the methods developed is with the use of a Steam Stripping, Catalytic Oxidation and Self Steam Compression. These are some of the technological scheme developed to say-so the ammonia level in the wastewater. It will all start with the ammonium-people wastewater, Fed into the Ammonia Stripper. This wastewater will be heated up with the help of vapour. Then, the ammonia in the effluent will be divest into the vapor, which would produce ammonium-rich steam. This ammonia-rich vapor will be released from the stripper and then it will go directly to what we call the Steam Compressor. Now while inner the steam compressor, the ammonia-rich steam will be reheated and then the ammonia-rich steam will then be utilized as the energy supply for the Reboiler. Another procedure will take spot in the Reboiler. After the energy trading at the reboiler, the ammonia-people vapour will go to the Ammonia Catalytic Converter. The converter will then decompose the steam and turn parts of it into Nitrogen and some into just regular gas. After all the reactions that happened, it is important to know that the state would photo contain some minute amount of ammonia. The gas would be cooled down, and then they would release it.

Although the gas contains harmless amount of ammonia, if it will accumulated, it’s pretty much hazardous too. So another method proposed is by using Nitrifying bacteria. This pedagogy is certainly Earth-friendly because these bacteria are course hap in our context and they also convert the redundant ammonia into thing that can be useful to other organism. There are two kinds of Nitrifying bacteria that works on the surplusage ammonium. The first ace is the Nitrosomonas spp. convert the excess ammonia into Nitrite. This nitrite will be then converted to Nitrates by the sec nitrifying bacteria called Nitrobacter spp. The nitrates can now be maximized by the organisms that need it.

Membrane constructor is also a popular mode on eliminating surplus ammonium in the dross H2O. In this drumhead constructor, the ammonium will be eliminated immediately and then will be converted into some sort of ammonium acetate. It’s kind hit II birds with unity rock. You’re eliminating ammonium in the effluent and at the Saame clip, you tin also brand chance by profiting with this ammonium acetate.

In Japan, they are really fashioning efforts in discovering ways on how they can eliminate ammonia in waste water. Their government is mandating that ammonium should only be no more than 100 ppm in water.
