Septic Tank Treatment Options – RID-X Versus NORWECO Bio-Gem Review

As a homeowner, I always had trouble with my septic tank system.  Due to various issues, I had to pump my septic tank every one to two years.  Around the year 2000, this was not a big issue in that pumping costs were about $100.  Septic tank pumping costs are now about $350 for a 1200 gallon septic.  This high-cost and the inconvenience of having to pump forced me to look at septic tank additives.  From the year 2002 about 2005, I tried many septic tank additives.  Septic tank treatment additives that I tried included RID-X and numerous other liquid additives.

All the standard commercial additives available, most notably RID-X, barely extended the time between pump intervals.  In addition, noticeable odor from my septic tank and floor drains were prevalent when I used RID-X in these other products.  As a licensed wastewater engineer, I felt that I could do better.  My research led me to start using NORWECO Bio-Gem organic digester.  I started using Bio-Gem in the summer of 2006.  Since using Bio-Gem organic digester, I have not had to pump my septic tank for over six years now.  One side benefit that I see in using the NORWECO Bio-Gem organic digester is the elimination of the rotten egg smell, which I had up to this point.

In addition, I had clogging line problems from the house to the septic tank.  My wife routinely poured bacon grease another oils down my sink drains.  These greases clogged my line from my house my septic tank.  I troubleshot this problem with a sewer camera prior to and after using Bio-Gem.  Over a couple months, the Bio-Gem product digested all the grease buildup in the line.  I have had no further problem with this line clogging.

I became a NORWECO distributor, since I like the product so much.  Please visit our online store for pricing on this fine product.  I discount the prices of all NORWECO products since I have low overhead and that I do volume online selling.

Sewage Wastewater Chlorine Tablet Feeder Design Considerations

By: Bruce Hardboss, PE

This article discusses minimum sewage wastewater chlorine-tablet-feeder design considerations.  As a wastewater engineer, I routinely see application of wastewater tablet feeders for chlorination designs that are not well thought out.  This article will highlight the NORWECO tablet feeder designs since we feel that the NORWECO tablet feeders are the best on the market.  The principles that we present are recommendations for you to implement in your design.

Feeder Tube

Tablet feeders generally have some sort if tube which is filled with the chlorine tablets.  The tube is easily removed for re-filling.  As noted in the figure below, the tube is slotted on the bottom, which allows the wastewater to contact the chlorine tablets, dissolving them, and thusly chlorinated in the wastewater stream.  The tube feeder product that you select should have a removable tube, such as the NORWECO design.

Tiered flow

The second design consideration should include some sort of tiered flow.  As in the figure above, as the flow is increased the width and depth of the tiered flow should also be increased.  This allows for, under low flow conditions, wetting of only the first tablet in the tablet tube.  This tiered flow design significantly reduces the rate that the tablets are expended.  In addition, under low flow conditions better chlorination due to contact with the first tablet is achieved.  The tablet feeder that you select should have a tiered flow design.

Tiered Flow Considerations

Warrantee.

Tablet feeder that you select should also have a minimum warranty of 20-years.  Tablet feeders that come with a 20-year warranty, generally, are made from superior materials that resist corrosion, cracking and deterioration.  So if the tablet feeder that you select does not have a 10-year warranty.  I would suspect that the materials used are substandard.

Installation

The NORWECO tablet feeders also come within a unique feature.  At the base of the tablet feeder holding tube, 4 inch PVC piping can be glued or sealed on the top of the tablet feeder.  This feature allows you to bury the tablet feeder deeper than the standard riser tubes.  The PVC piping thickness can be increased to schedule 80, which allows for superior protection of the feeder riser tubes from the surrounding soil.  Alternatively, the NORWECO IT series tablet feeders include plastic direct burial risers, which are generally used in commercial applications. As we increase daily wastewater flow-rates, the tablet feeders increase the number of tablet feeder tubes, as noted in the figure below:

Increased Number of Chlorine Tubes With Increased Flow Rates

Conclusions

As you shop around for your next tablet feeder, we strongly recommend the NORWECO line of products.  NORWECO is been in operation for over 100 years.  NORWECO’s products are seasoned, and continuously improved.  If you are considering purchasing or installing a tablet feeder in your present system, then please consider the designs options that we have presented in this article.  If you are interested in our NORWECO products, please click on any one of the images in this article, or merely go to the NORWECO products page on this website.  Our recommendations are written by a registered professional engineer with a strong background in wastewater engineering.

Commercial Wastewater Treatment

One of the first line treatments advised by physicians for constipation may have no pharmaceuticals at all. Rather, he or she will recommend that a patient go on a fiber-intensive diet plan, supplementing regular foods with psyllium or other sources of fiber. Some natural sources may also be suitable depending on whether they contain enough fiber.

A lot of individuals have heard of supplements like metamucil that are fortified with loads of fiber. Metamucil is really a product made by Procter and Gamble, marketed to people who suffer from constipation. But just a little research will show that you will find high fiber foods from entirely natural sources. Prunes, or dried plums, are 1 such instance. Probably the most interesting fact is that prunes contain an additional agent that’s advantageous for treating constipation.

Plums have been a part of mankind’s food source for numerous millennia. Archaeologist evidence shows large quantity of pits in waste sites that go back to ancient occasions. Then as now, the procedure for manufacturing prunes has probably changed fairly little. The plum fruit is harvested from the plant and then arranged in a cool oven structure. The plums are dehydrated at 180 degrees Fahrenheit for a little under 20 hours. The resulting prunes are collected for additional processing.

The chemical makeup of prunes is complex, which is one cause for its multipronged effectiveness as a constipation agent. And although we have sufficiently advanced technology to discern these chemicals, we have but to totally understand the mechanism whereby each chemical aids in laxative activity.

The issues we do understand concerning its anti-constipation properties are two folds. Initial, we know that the high fiber content of prunes means that consuming it assists bulk up foods in the way conventional fiber supplements aid digestion. Two, we also know that prunes contain a lot of sorbitol which is a sugar-like substance that retains water and makes stool softer and as a result faster-moving in the gut.

On top of ingredients with laxative properties, prunes are a high energy supply. The high power is derived from its mix of both simple and complex sugars such as glucose and fructose. Individuals who eat prunes get a quick power boost also as a sustained one from digestion of complex sugars. We also know that prunes contain a great deal of sorbitol which is really a sugar-like substance that retains water and makes stool softer and therefore faster-moving in the gut.

A stream of suggestive evidence shows that prunes include a big quantity of other compounds that aid in health. Phenolic compounds are found in high concentrations and have been linked to enhanced laxative effects, further supporting the use of prunes for constipated patients. Potassium is also in high concentrations. Like bananas, eating prunes might assist reduce muscle fatigue and improve efficiency.

Even though there’s no need to prepare the prunes in a unique way before consuming, a commercial food preparer within the United Kingdom stumbled upon a house recipe for treating constipation that entails blending prunes with other fruits and vegetables. The recipe, known by the name Beverley-Travis, has become well-known as well as studied for its efficacy in enhancing digestive health.

Commercial Wastewater Treatment

An overview of how waste water is treated….

Commercial Wastewater Treatment

Article by Adi Cohen

Want to learn how biological wastewater treatment really works? Read this article to learn how companies are becoming more green by using biological wastewater treatments. As water is used during daily processes, both residential and industrial, waste and contaminants are introduced into the water. There are a variety of ways to combat this such as physical, chemical, and biological wastewater treatments. The main goal of these treatments is to remove the contaminants in the water so it is clean enough to be discharged back into the natural source or reused again.Considering the amount of water that is used in the world, processes such as biological wastewater treatment are becoming increasingly important. Although many companies are trying to reduce the level of water needed for their commercial activities, there are many areas that remain dependent on water flows and will continue to produce waster requiring biological wastewater treatments. There are a number of industries that produce an excessive amount of wastewater. The iron industry that requires different stages of temperature during its processes uses water as a coolant. Mining procedures pollute water with rock particles and minerals. Oil refineries and storage farms also produce large masses of waste and are frequent targets of environmental protectionists. Processing food generates a large amount of wastewater both from vegetable washing and animal body fluids and hormones. Many other industries use dyes, chemicals, and pesticides all contaminating the water and need biological waste water treatments to purify the water.Different techniques are used for biological wastewater treatment. Most biological wastewater treatments are based on the concept of putting bacteria in the water to feed on the organic matter in the water. This should ultimately reduce the levels of BOD in the water. In the second phase of biological wastewater treatment, the bacteria metabolize the material turning it into a tangible form that collects at the bottom of the tank or turns into slime. Once the material has solidified and can be removed, the water is much cleaner.Similarly to most biological processes, biological wastewater treatments occur at an ambient temperature. This is an important energy saving aspect that affects both how environmentally friendly the process is and results in important cost savings.Interesting? New Technology Selection Of Residential Wastewater Treatment Packaged Plants

by Bruce Bosshard, PE

BnB Engineering conducted a review of residential wastewater treatment systems on the market today. Our review picked Norweco Singulair as the top manufacturer. Norweco wastewater has been in operation for over 100 years. During this period, NORWECO has continuously improved wastewater products from basic residential septic tank designs, and then extended aeration systems which have evolved into the NORWECO SINGULAIR line of products. The SINGULAIR line of products has superior wastewater treatment performance, including built-in; 1)Robust effluent filtration, 2) Wastewater De-nitrification, 3) Chlorination capabilities and UV Disinfection, 4) De-chlorination capabilities, 5) Flow Equalization, 6) Wastewater treatment capabilities to U.S. drinking water standards., 7) Low costs, 8) 50-year warranty exchange program

BnB views NORWECO SINGULAIR as the best residential wastewater treatment packaged plant on the today’s market. GEOFLOW, a leader in drip irrigation products, is teamed with NORWECO to provide add on drip irrigation products. GEOFLOW recognizes that SINGULAIR’s top residential wastewater treatment performance is unparalleled. The best wastewater treatment performance, including de-nitrification (NSF 40 certified) sets NORWECO well above extended aeration competing systems. In BnB’s final decision, we included NORWECO SINGULAIR’s competitive pricing, demonstrated NSF-40 certified performance, a long track record (100 years) in continuous improvement and innovation as key factors.

The following is a general Discussion on our Pick. To provide a robust wastewater treatment system you need to incorporate the following into the basic design; 1) One-day pretreatment, 2) One-day aeration/extended aeration, 3)Flow equalization, 4) Filtration, 5) Tertiary treatment for de-nitrification, 5) Built-in Chlorination and De-Chlorination

All NORWECO SINGULAIR systems include a minimum of 1-day wastewater pretreatment. NORWECO requires stringent quality assurance. One key to SINGULAIR success is that standard precast tank molds are used by all distributors. This standardization makes certain that there are little variations from one caster to another. Competing systems often allow concrete tank casters to use existing molds. Holes are generally cut in each tank and their one-size fits all units are placed in the holes. These competing systems lack the conformity of SINGULAIR systems, therefore, their performance is not always consistent. In SINGULAIR systems, pretreatment is accomplished by requiring a minimum of 1-gallon solids separation tank capacity for each gallon of maximum daily wastewater flow. SINGULAIR designs ensure that larger packaged systems increase solids tank capacity accordingly. The basic SINGULAIR systems are 600, 750, 1,000, 1,250, and 1,500 gallons per day (GPD). Each configuration mandates that pretreatment tank capacity is increased accordingly. NORWECO provides ALL distributors with approved concrete molds which ensure tanks are always the same. This mandate ensures adequate stage-one residential wastewater treatment and consistent NSF-40 performance.

Similar to pretreatment tank capacities, minimum aeration tank volumes are increased according to maximum estimated GPD flows. The increase in aeration tank size promotes a minimum of 1-day aeration. Also, as aeration volumes are increased, the number of aerators are increased to ensure adequate aeration capacity (1,000, 1,250, and 1,500 GPD units have two aerators.). NORWECO SINGULAIR utilizes a stirring technology (the only moving parts) which minimizes the airflow into the system. The low airflow (2-4 cubic feet per minute (CFM)) minimizes odors which are generally associated with extended aeration systems. The aeration flow dissipates into the surrounding soil, which minimizes smells from the systems. Competing systems, that we looked at, use excessive air-flow (over 20 CFM) to stir the wastewater. This continuous-high-airflow rate causes bad odors in the general area of the pipe outlet. Also, when the tank is continuously aerated, there is no possibility for de-nitrification, since the anoxic conditions are required for de-nitrification.

Flow equalization is accomplished by maintaining the Bio-Kinetic (BK) module height within +/- one inch. The SINGULAIR TANKS are constructed with about 6-inches of minimum free board. The BK-module has a series of small holes in each side of the module. As tank level increases, slow flows of wastewater are allowed through the holes. The systems can easily be expanded to multiple treatment units, if designs ensure that all the treatment units are at the same elevation. BnB refers this configuration as a treatment node. Here the SINGULAIR system can be expanded to much larger treatment nodes, with limits at about 6,000 GPD.

The BK module also promotes superb filtration and de-nitrification. To reach stringent NSF performance requirements for total suspended solids (TSS), SINGULAIR BK modules possess a robust group of contact discs which in turn precipitate out the vast majority of TSS. Once again, the BK module design and style is patented and can’t be integrated into competing systems. We’ve observed effective BK module filtration up to 1. 5 years of operations, without servicing. The comprehensive filtering capability in the SINGULAIR BK module provides this robust promise. Competing devices evaluated depend on straightforward filtration for example bags or filters which are high priced as well as require quarterly check up, cleansing and-or replacing. The SINGULAIR BK modules have numerous “stacked plates” that are comparable to commercial clarifiers. The stacked pates enable de-nitrifying bacteria (anaerobic bacteria -absence of oxygen) to fill the plates. The FE, slowly and gradually flowing residential wastewater flow, passes within the plates and the micro organism decreases the nitrogen or de-nitrifies the treated wastewater flow. This revolutionary approach has demonstrated, in some designs, to lower total nitrogen to under 5 mg/L (drinking water standard is less than 10 mg/L total nitrogen).

BK-modules can be readily converted to include both chlorination and de-chlorination. The top of the BK-modules are constructed to receive tubes which can be fitted with chlorination or de-chlorination tablets. Since the BK-modules provide low-equalized-flows, the tubes utilize specially formulated tablets that function well at low flow rates. The Chlorination/de-chlorination tubes cost about $75 each. Therefore, for about $150 the systems can be converted to chlorination disinfection units. This is a very cost-effective option. A few states, including TX requires that FE, reliable chlorination, and filtration devices be added to the effluent of most competing systems. NORWECO gladly provides them BK-2000 modules. The BK-2000 is a small tank that contains one BK-module. In re-use applications, this add-on allows the competing systems to perform at more-reliable and higher standards.

We consider NORWECO SINGULAIR costs as highly competitive. The NORWECO SINGULAIR systems are distributed locally by authorized NORWECO distributors. Costs (controlled locally by the NORWECO distributor), for a single family residence (up to 600 GPD wastewater flow) range from $3,500 to about $5,000 per unit. The NORWECO SINGULAIR GREEN systems cost approximately $800 to $1,000 more per system, depending on location. The advantage of the SINGULAIR GREEN system is that it can be transported to remote areas and placed with a standard backhoe (weighs approximately 1,000 pounds). BnB Alternative Septic Solutions, LLC chooses NOWECO SINGULAIR as the top residential wastewater treatment system on the market today. NORWECO is also teamed with GEOFLOW drip irrigation systems and provides integrated wastewater reuse systems. The best wastewater treatment performance, including de-nitrification (NSF 40 certified) sets NORWECO well above competing extended aeration systems.

We consider NORWECO’s demonstrated performance, price and the technical -principles of the SINGULAIR design when rating NORWECO SINGULAIR as the top residential wastewater treatment system on the market today.

General Discussion

To provide a robust wastewater treatment system you need to incorporate the following included in the basic design:

  1. One-day pretreatment
  2. One-day aeration/extended aeration
  3. Flow equalization
  4. Filtration
  5. Tertiary treatment for dentrification
  6. Built-in Chlorination and De-Chlorination

One-day pretreatment

All NORWECO SINGULAIR systems include a minimum of 1-day wastewater pretreatment. Pretreatment is accomplished by requiring a minimum of 1-gallon solids separation tank capacity for each gallon of maximum daily wastewater flow.

One-Day Aeration

Similar to pretreatment tank capacities, minimum aeration tank volumes are increased according to maximum estimated GPD flows. The increase in aeration tank size promotes a minimum of 1-day aeration. Also, as aeration volumes are increased, the number of aerators are increased to ensure adequate aeration capacity (1,000, 1,250, and 1,500 GPD units have two aerators.). NORWECO SINGULAIR utilizes a stirring technology (only moving parts) which minimizes the airflow into the system. The low airflow (2-4 cubic feet per minute (CFM) minimizes odors which are generally associated with extended aeration systems. The aeration flow dissipates into the surrounding soil, which minimizes smells from the systems. Competing systems use excessive air-flow (over 20 CFM) to stir the wastewater. This high airflow rate causes bad odors in the general area of the pipe outlet. Also, when the tank is continuously aerated, there is no possibility for de-nitrification, since the anoxic conditions are required for de-nitrification.

Flow Equalization

The flow equalization is accomplished by maintaining the Bio-Kinetic (BK) module height within +/- one inch. Each 6,000 GPD treatment node consists of four 1500 GPD Singulair units with a 6,000 gallon pre-treatment tank. Surges to the treatment nodes are regulated by the patented BK modules. Each BK module has ¼ inch holes at two elevations which will incorporate any surges and equalize flow between BK modules. The slow throughput promotes equal flow between the four 1,500 GPD units.

Filtration and De-nitrification

The second function of the BK-Module(s) is to filter particulates from the wastewater stream. The BK-Module has a series of contact plates which cause most particulates to precipitate out of the wastewater stream. Also, the BK-Modules are generally operating in the absence of oxygen (anoxic conditions), which promotes the buildup of de-nitrification bacteria. These bacteria eliminate total nitrogen from the wastewater stream. Once again, this patented configuration minimizes surges in the residential wastewater flow rates, which minimizes exceeding of wastewater treatment effluent goals. The NORWECO SINGULAIR aerators cycle 1-hour on and 1-hour off, promoting anoxic conditions for about 50 percent of the time. During the anoxic cycles, de-nitrification of the residential wastewater stream occurs.

Built-in Chlorination and De-Chlorination

Each BK-Module has the built-in capability to insert chlorination and de-chlorination tablet holders. This low-cost residential wastewater disinfection option (about $75) is quite unique. Since the chlorinator is built into the BK-module, wastewater flows are equalized and generally flow through tow ¼ holes. This slow contact rate with the chlorinators ensures reliable chlorination of the residential wastewater stream.

Costs

The NORWECO SINGULAIR systems are distributed locally by authorized NOWECO distributors.
